Importance to Swiss construction

The cement produced and delivered by the Swiss cement industry forms the core ingredient of concrete – the most important building material of our time. Ensuring that cement continues to be produced domestically is of national importance.

Importance to the Swiss construction industry

Cement production is a capital-intensive industry. Swiss cement manufacturers invest heavily in the country, both financially and in terms of expertise. Some 650 people are employed at cement plants across Switzerland, and that’s without factoring in the numerous jobs created at suppliers, manufacturers of concrete products and various SMEs throughout the country. The cement industry ensures that there is always enough cement for use in key infrastructure projects such as bridges, tunnels, roads, dams, pipeline networks and power plants. Between roughly 4 and 5 million tonnes of cement are needed each year in Switzerland, a figure that domestic production more than covers. This is of huge benefit to the Swiss construction industry and the roughly 320,000 people employed in the sector, who know that they have a readily available and reliable source of concrete whenever it is required.
