A sector with Swiss roots
The Swiss cement industry is in a truly envious position. Unlike sectors that rely on foreign imports, Swiss cement manufacturers can source their required raw materials domestically. Producing cement requires minerals such as limestone and marl. Switzerland has rich deposits of these materials – particularly in the Jura Arc region. In 1871, Robert Vigier opened Switzerland’s first cement plant in Luterbach. Cement bearing Vigier’s name is produced to this day at the Péry plant in the Bernese Jura region.
